How to set up a calm corner they will actually use

Cómo montar un rincón de calma que de verdad use
Almost every calm corner ends up full of toys and unused. The difference comes down to four details.

Almost every book on sensitive parenting recommends a calm corner. Almost every calm corner ends up full of toys and unused. The difference between one and the other comes down to four details.

What it is really for

It isn’t a thinking chair in disguise. It isn’t the place you send them when they misbehave. If you use it that way even once, the corner is burnt and they won’t go back there under their own steam.

It is a place they go to when they notice they are loaded. That is the whole point: the aim isn’t for them to calm down, it is for them to learn to recognise that they need to calm down and to know what to do about it. That skill will serve them at seven and at thirty-seven.

The four details that decide it

One. They build it. Your job is to offer the space and the materials. Theirs is to decide where it goes, what goes in and how it looks. A corner decorated by an adult is an adult’s room; one decorated by them is theirs, and we go back to what is ours.

Two. Small and enclosed. A nook works better than an area: under a table with a cloth over it, an emptied wardrobe, the gap between the bed and the wall, a fabric tent. The feeling of being tucked in lowers arousal. An open corner in the middle of the living room doesn’t.

Three. Very little inside. A cushion, a blanket, a low light, two or three books, something soft they like to touch. Nothing that flashes, nothing with sound, nothing that wins their attention on its own. If there are ten things in there, the corner is a place to play, and playing doesn’t rest you in the same way.

Four. Never as a punishment. Not once. That is the rule that holds up everything else.

How to launch it

Don’t introduce it on the day of a tantrum. Introduce it on a Saturday morning, calmly, as a project for the two of you. “I’m going to make you a place for when you notice there’s too much noise inside. Where shall we put it?”

For the first few days, go in with them. Read a story in there. Let the place be associated with something good before it has to work in the bad moments.

And when the bad moment comes, don’t send them: offer. “Do you want us to go to your corner for a bit?” If they say no, that’s fine. The first time they go on their own, without anyone telling them to, is the day the tool has worked.

What to put in it, by age

Three to five: a slightly weighted blanket, a soft toy, a picture book, a warm light they can switch on themselves.

Six to nine: add paper and pencils. Many children this age regulate themselves better by drawing than by breathing, and drawing has the advantage that you don’t have to teach it to them.

Ten and up: their own books, music with headphones, a notebook. At this age the corner starts to resemble what it will always be, a place where you are alone on purpose.

An addition that works

Next to the corner, a small box with four or five cards drawn by them, each one with something that helps: drink water, have a hug, blow as if blowing out candles, lie down, be quiet. When they are overwhelmed nothing comes to mind, and choosing a card is far easier than inventing a solution.

You make them together on a calm day, and there they stay.

What you will notice yourself

The corner helps you too. It gives you something to offer that is neither a lecture nor a punishment, and that lowers the tension in the house a great deal. Over time, the sign that it is working isn’t that they use it a lot: it is the day you see them come out of it by themselves, already calm, without your having had to say anything.

The sensory refuge and the calm kit are explained step by step in Niños Altamente Sensibles and in Corazones Valientes, Niños Sensibles.
