Many highly sensitive people reach adulthood with their self-esteem damaged. Not for lack of achievements, there are often plenty, but because they have spent twenty years hearing a version of themselves that doesn’t fit: too much, over the top, touchy, soft.
Where the crack comes from
A child who reacts more intensely receives more corrections. Not always with bad intent, almost never in fact. But the sum of “it’s not that bad”, repeated through childhood, leaves a specific sediment: the idea that something in you is badly calibrated.
The serious part isn’t the memory of those sentences. It is that they become the internal voice commenting on what you do, and that voice is still talking at forty.
There is a second, subtler mechanism. Someone who perceives a great deal detects the disapproving look sooner, the irritated gesture, the odd silence. They detect real signals that others don’t see, and having nobody to check them against, they tend to read them against themselves.
What doesn’t work
Positive affirmations in the mirror. If you don’t believe them, repeating them only underlines the distance between what you say and what you think.
Comparing yourself with the person who seems unruffled by anything. That comparison has no good ending and is usually badly made, because you don’t know what is going on inside the other person.
And resolving to be less sensitive. That is like resolving to be shorter.
What does move the needle
Separating the fact from the interpretation. This is the central exercise and it seems silly until you do it in writing. In one column, what happened: “he didn’t answer my message all day”. In the other, what you told yourself: “he’s tired of me”. Seeing them apart makes it obvious that the second doesn’t follow from the first.
Keeping a record of what you did do. A sensitive person remembers their mistakes in detail and forgets their successes, because the mistakes arrived with more emotional charge. Two lines a day corrects that bias with your own data.
Talking to yourself the way you’d talk to a friend. This isn’t a nice phrase, it is a concrete comparison: nobody would say to a friend what they say to themselves after an average meeting.
Finding a context where your way of being is useful. Nothing rebuilds as much as an environment where perceiving a lot is a recognised advantage: caring, teaching, creating, analysing, accompanying. That isn’t self-deception, it is no longer swimming against the current every day.
About the tests
Self-esteem questionnaires are good for one thing: giving you a snapshot of the starting point that you can compare in six months. They are not for labelling you or explaining you to yourself.
If you take one, file it with the date and don’t look at it for half a year. The value is in the difference, not in the number.
Where an article stops
All of this holds for a generally low self-esteem, which is the common case. If what is there is something deeper, and you can tell the difference yourself, a text on a website isn’t the tool. A good professional is, and asking for one isn’t a failure at anything.
Day 17 of Personas Altamente Sensibles includes the self-esteem test and the exercises for working on it.
